Pediatric Ophthalmologist

Dr. Christina L. Butera, M.D., is a board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist at The Eye Center and Loudoun County's first full-time pediatric ophthalmologist. Fellowship-trained in pediatric ophthalmology at Denver Children's Hospital, she cares exclusively for children diagnosing and treating strabismus, amblyopia, retinopathy of prematurity, and developmental vision problems. Parents consistently note her thoroughness and her patience with anxious young patients; good communication sits at the center of how she practices, and she takes the time to remember what matters to each child from one visit to the next.

Professional Excellence

Dr. Butera has devoted her career entirely to children's eye health. After earning her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio, she completed her ophthalmology residency at The George Washington University and a subspecialty fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology at Denver Children's Hospital training focused specifically on the developing visual system. She is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS).

"My focus is on catching children's eye problems early and explaining everything in plain language, so parents understand exactly what's happening and what comes next. I want every family to leave feeling confident that their child's vision is in caring, expert hands."

Practice & Experience

As Loudoun County's first full-time pediatric ophthalmologist, Dr. Butera has spent more than a decade caring for the area's children and their families. Because she treats only pediatric patients, she brings specialist depth rather than general eye care to conditions such as strabismus ("crossed eye"), amblyopia ("lazy eye"), retinopathy of prematurity, and developmental delays in vision, catching problems early when treatment works best. She sees patients across The Eye Center's Sterling, Lansdowne, and Manassas offices and lives in Leesburg with her Belgian sheepdog, Storm.
