Position your monitor about an arm's length away, with the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds to give your eye-focusing muscles a brief rest.

Do not patch the eye or press on it. Avoid eating or drinking if a severe injury is suspected, since surgery may be necessary. Do not drive yourself if your vision is affected.
Chemical burns, impaled or embedded objects, sudden vision loss, severe or worsening pain, and visible cuts to the eye all require emergency room care immediately. These situations need treatment within minutes to hours to preserve your vision, and a standard eye exam appointment is not appropriate for these injuries.

We use fluorescein dye, an orange stain that glows bright green under blue light, to reveal corneal scratches and abrasions that are invisible to the naked eye. A slit lamp, which is a microscope designed specifically for examining the eye, allows us to inspect every structure in detail. If trauma has affected the internal structures of your eye, we may measure intraocular pressure, which is the fluid pressure inside your eye, provided there is no concern about an open injury to the eye itself.
For injuries involving possible intraocular or orbital foreign bodies, imaging may be necessary. If there is any possibility of a metallic foreign body, we specifically avoid MRI, which can be dangerous in that situation. Most corneal abrasions heal on their own within a few days when properly cared for. We typically prescribe antibiotic eye drops to prevent infection while your cornea repairs itself and recommend lubricating drops to keep the surface comfortable during healing.
Contact lens wearers need prompt evaluation, a different antibiotic to reduce the risk of serious infection, and strict avoidance of lenses until we confirm the eye has fully healed. Topical anesthetic drops are never sent home with patients, as they can mask worsening symptoms and interfere with healing. Some patients benefit from a bandage contact lens, a soft lens placed over the healing surface to reduce pain, though this approach requires close follow-up to watch for infection.
