Oculoplastic surgery sits at the crossroads of eye medicine and reconstructive care. It covers everything from drooping eyelids that block your sight to cosmetic treatments that help your eyes look rested and refreshed — always weighing how a change affects both the appearance and the health of the eye.
Unlike a general plastic surgeon, an oculoplastic surgeon trains first as an ophthalmologist, so they understand how the eyelids, cornea, and tear film work together. The eyelids do far more than frame your face: they protect the eye's surface, spread the tear film with every blink, and drain excess moisture away.
Blepharoplasty removes or repositions excess skin, muscle, or fat from the upper and lower eyelids. Upper blepharoplasty addresses heavy hooding that makes the eyes look tired or makes applying eye makeup difficult, while lower blepharoplasty treats under-eye bags and puffiness. When drooping skin blocks peripheral vision, upper blepharoplasty may also correct a functional problem and qualify for insurance coverage.
Even when a drooping lid does not block enough vision to qualify as functional, it can still make the eyes look uneven or sleepy. Cosmetic ptosis repair lifts the lid to a brighter, more symmetrical position — and your surgeon will distinguish true ptosis from excess upper-lid skin, since these different problems call for different techniques.

Our oculoplastic surgeon completed a fellowship through the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, known as ASOPRS. This training goes beyond a standard ophthalmology residency to focus exclusively on the eyelids, orbit, lacrimal (tear-drainage) system, and the periorbital face — the region around the eyes.
That depth matters. Surgeons without ophthalmology training may focus on the skin surface without accounting for a weak lid, a dry-eye condition, or the precise anatomy that keeps the cornea protected. Over-correction during eyelid surgery can leave the eye exposed during sleep, leading to dryness, irritation, or corneal damage.

Both may perform eyelid procedures, but an oculoplastic surgeon trains first as an ophthalmologist and then completes a dedicated fellowship in eyelid, orbital, and tear-drainage surgery. That means your surgeon understands how changes to lid position affect corneal health, the tear film, and vision, not just how the result looks.
In many cases, yes. Combining ptosis repair with blepharoplasty, for example, addresses the mechanical cause of drooping and refines the cosmetic outcome in a single procedure and one recovery. Your surgeon will discuss whether a combined approach suits your anatomy and goals.
It varies by procedure. Botox or fillers involve minimal downtime, with most people returning to normal activity the same day, while blepharoplasty typically involves about one to two weeks of visible bruising and swelling. Your surgeon gives you a specific timeline and aftercare instructions.
Chalazion incision and drainage is typically an in-office procedure under local anesthesia, and most patients return to normal activity quickly. If a chalazion recurs in the same spot, your surgeon may send a small tissue sample for analysis to rule out other causes.
Sudden eye bulging, rapid changes in lid position, signs of infection around the eye socket (redness, swelling, warmth, or fever), vision changes, or significant pain after facial trauma all warrant same-day evaluation. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these develop.
