What Is LASIK?

LASIK is a laser-based procedure that reshapes the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, to correct how light focuses on the retina. When light focuses correctly, vision becomes clear without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism happen when the eye does not focus light precisely on the retina. LASIK uses a precise laser to gently reshape the cornea so that light bends correctly and lands on the retina, producing clear, sharp vision.

The Two-Laser Process

Modern LASIK involves two distinct laser steps. First, a femtosecond laser creates a thin, hinged flap on the surface of the cornea. The flap is gently lifted, and an excimer laser then removes a carefully calculated amount of corneal tissue underneath. Once reshaping is complete, the flap is repositioned and bonds naturally without any stitches.

At The Eye Center, we perform iLASIK, an all-laser, bladeless procedure that replaces the older mechanical blade with the IntraLase femtosecond laser for flap creation. This approach allows for a more uniform, customized flap, and it is the same platform approved for use by the U.S. Navy and NASA.

Who Is a Good Candidate for LASIK?

LASIK is not right for every patient, and a thorough evaluation is essential before any decision is made. Our team reviews your eye health, prescription history, and overall wellness to determine whether you are a strong candidate and which procedure fits you best. Some conditions, such as diabetes or a history of eye herpes, are reviewed case by case.

  • A stable prescription, typically for a year or longer

  • No active eye infection, keratoconus (thinning and bulging of the cornea), or other corneal disease
  • No autoimmune or immune-suppressing conditions

Benefits of LASIK

For patients who qualify, LASIK offers meaningful and lasting improvements to everyday life. The benefits go well beyond simply reducing the need for glasses or contacts.

Rapid vision improvement

Most patients notice significantly clearer vision within the first 24 hours. Full stabilization can take several weeks to a few months, but the speed of initial improvement is one of the most cited advantages.

Less dependence on glasses

Most LASIK patients reduce or eliminate their use of prescription lenses for daily activities like driving, working, exercising, and traveling. This simplifies routines and lowers ongoing costs over time.

Long-lasting results

The reshaped tissue does not grow back, so results are long-lasting and most patients enjoy stable vision for many years. A small number, more often those with higher prescriptions, see some regression that an enhancement can address. Natural aging changes such as presbyopia or cataracts can affect vision later, but they are not caused by LASIK itself.

LASIK has high reported patient satisfaction among elective procedures, combining improved visual freedom, minimal recovery time, and lasting results.

Risks and Considerations

As with any surgical procedure, LASIK carries potential risks that every patient should understand. Serious complications are rare, especially when patients are carefully screened and treated with advanced technology. Being informed helps you make the best decision for your health.

Dry eye

This is the most common side effect of LASIK. The procedure temporarily affects the corneal nerves that regulate tear production, which can cause dryness or a gritty sensation. Artificial tears and, when needed, prescription drops manage symptoms, and most patients improve within a few months.

Glare, halos, and night vision

Some patients notice glare, halos, or starbursts in low light during early recovery. These visual disturbances are a normal part of healing and typically fade as the cornea stabilizes over the following weeks. In rare cases, some disturbance may persist longer than expected.

Under- or over-correction

Not every patient reaches the exact target prescription on the first treatment, especially with higher degrees of correction. If residual refractive error remains once the eye has fully healed, an enhancement procedure can often be performed to fine-tune the result.

Flap-related concerns

Creating a corneal flap introduces a small risk of displacement or, very rarely, cells growing beneath it. The IntraLase laser and careful aftercare help minimize these risks considerably. Avoiding eye rubbing and wearing protective eyewear as directed further reduces the chance of complications.

Rare but serious risks

Corneal ectasia, a progressive weakening of the cornea, is rare and most strongly associated with inadequate pre-surgical screening. Infection and significant vision loss are also extremely rare when proper surgical protocols are carefully followed.

Loss of best-corrected vision

In rare cases, patients lose a line or more of best-corrected vision, meaning their sharpest possible vision, even with glasses, is slightly reduced afterward. Careful screening and modern laser technology work together to keep this risk very low for nearly all patients.

Your free LASIK consultation

We offer free LASIK consultations at four of our five office locations. During your visit we perform a comprehensive eye exam that measures corneal thickness and shape, evaluates your tear film and retinal health, reviews your prescription history, and assesses overall eye health. This gives Dr. Boutros everything needed to confirm candidacy and design a personalized plan.

Preparing for your procedure

If you wear soft contact lenses, you will stop wearing them for a period before surgery, typically one to two weeks, so your corneas return to their natural shape. Rigid gas-permeable lenses require a longer contact-free period, usually up to four weeks. On the day of surgery, avoid makeup, lotions, creams, or fragrances around your eyes, since these can introduce contaminants.

The day of your procedure

The full appointment, including preparation and post-procedure checks, takes about two hours. Numbing drops keep you comfortable throughout. The IntraLase laser creates the corneal flap in about 20 seconds per eye, and the excimer laser reshapes your cornea in under one minute per eye. The flap is repositioned, and you are monitored briefly before going home with a trusted driver.

Recovery and aftercare

Most patients feel mild scratchiness or tearing for a few hours, with vision often improved within the first day. You will use antibiotic drops, anti-inflammatory drops, and preservative-free artificial tears while you heal. Follow-up visits are scheduled the day after surgery, at one week, at one month, and as needed. For several weeks, avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming, hot tubs, dusty environments, and strenuous activity, and wear sunglasses outdoors.

When LASIK Is Not the Right Fit

Not every patient is a candidate for LASIK, and that is not a setback. Several effective alternatives can achieve excellent vision correction for patients whose corneas or prescriptions do not meet LASIK criteria.

PRK

PRK treats the same refractive errors as LASIK with the same excimer laser, but without creating a corneal flap. It is often recommended for thinner corneas or higher-risk lifestyles. Recovery takes a little longer, with comparable long-term results.

The EVO Visian implantable collamer lens, a soft and biocompatible lens, is placed inside the eye in front of your natural lens, without removing corneal tissue. It suits higher prescriptions, thinner corneas, or chronic dry eye, stays in place indefinitely, and can be removed if needed.

Monovision correction

Monovision corrects one eye for distance and the other for near vision, reducing dependence on reading glasses for patients with presbyopia. It can be achieved through LASIK, PRK, or the ICL, and a contact lens trial is often recommended first.

These answers address questions our patients commonly bring to their consultations. If something is not covered here, we encourage you to ask during your free evaluation.

Can I have LASIK if I have been told my corneas are thin?

Thin corneas do not automatically disqualify you from vision correction surgery, but they may make traditional LASIK a less appropriate choice. During your evaluation, Dr. Boutros measures corneal thickness precisely and, if LASIK is not safe, will discuss whether PRK or the EVO Visian ICL can achieve your vision goals without placing undue stress on the cornea. The right procedure depends on the degree of thinning and the prescription being corrected.

Is LASIK suitable if I have dry eye?

Significant pre-existing dry eye is one of the most common reasons a patient may not be immediately cleared for LASIK. In some cases, treating the underlying dry eye first can make LASIK possible later. In other cases, PRK or the ICL may be safer alternatives. Our team evaluates your tear film quality as part of every LASIK consultation and will give you an honest assessment of your options.

How long does it take for vision to fully stabilize after LASIK?

Most patients experience rapid initial improvement within the first day or two, but complete stabilization typically takes between three and six months. During this window, minor fluctuations in vision are normal and do not necessarily indicate a problem. If your vision has not reached its expected outcome after full healing, Dr. Boutros can evaluate whether an enhancement procedure is appropriate.

What warning signs should prompt me to call during recovery?

While mild discomfort, light sensitivity, and slight fluctuations in vision are normal in the early days, certain symptoms require prompt attention. Contact us right away if you experience severe eye pain that does not improve with artificial tears, a sudden decrease in the vision you had gained, increasing redness or discharge, or any new floaters or flashes of light. These may indicate a complication that needs evaluation quickly.

Can I have LASIK if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

We recommend waiting until well after pregnancy and breastfeeding are complete before pursuing LASIK. Hormonal changes during these periods can cause temporary shifts in your prescription, making it difficult to confirm that your vision is stable enough for a lasting surgical result. Healing can also be affected by the physiological changes of pregnancy. Waiting ensures that the prescription we treat reflects your true baseline vision.

What happens if my vision changes years after LASIK?

LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea, so the correction itself does not wear off. However, natural aging processes such as the development of presbyopia or cataracts can affect how clearly you see over time. If your uncorrected vision changes meaningfully years after LASIK and sufficient corneal tissue remains, an enhancement procedure may be an option. Dr. Boutros evaluates each case individually to determine whether retreatment is safe and likely to be effective.
