Keep it about one to two inches above your eye, close enough to aim accurately but far enough to avoid touching your eye. Brace your hand lightly against your forehead or cheek to keep it steady.
Use the fingers of your other hand to gently pull your lower eyelid downward. This creates a small pouch between the lid and the eyeball that catches the drop and holds it against your eye long enough to be absorbed.
While still looking up, squeeze the bottle gently to release a single drop into the pocket you created. You should feel a cool, wet sensation when it lands. One drop is all that is needed for each dose because the eye can only hold a limited amount of liquid before the excess overflows.
If you are unsure whether the drop went in, use a mirror or ask someone to watch your aim. Wait a moment and try once more only if you are confident the first attempt completely missed. Do not automatically re-dose every time you blink, particularly with potent medications like glaucoma drops or steroids, as extra doses can increase side effects. If the tip does touch your eye or skin, recap the bottle and contact our office or your pharmacist about whether to discard and replace it. This is especially important after eye surgery, during an active infection, or if your immune system is weakened. Do not rinse, wipe, or disinfect the tip on your own, as doing so can make contamination worse rather than better.
Blinking immediately is a natural reflex, but it pushes most of the medication out of your eye and down your cheek before it can absorb. Focusing on keeping your eyes gently closed right after application helps you resist the urge to blink.
If a drop clearly spills out, you may repeat the dose once. However, do not automatically re-dose each time you feel the reflex, especially with glaucoma drops or steroid medications, where extra doses can increase side effects and systemic absorption. After closing your eyes, blot any excess liquid from your cheek gently with a clean tissue, but never rub your eye.
Your eye holds only about one drop of liquid before the rest overflows. Using two or three drops at once does not improve results, it simply wastes medication and increases the chance of side effects from excess absorption. Squeeze handles attach to standard bottles and provide extra leverage for those with weak hands. Electronic dispensers release a single drop at the press of a button, removing the need to squeeze entirely.

Close your eye and gently roll your eyeball to spread the ointment across the surface. Your vision will be temporarily blurry, so most ointments are best used at bedtime. Always apply any liquid drops before ointment and wait at least ten minutes between them.
