Start with first-degree relatives, meaning your parents and siblings. Also mention grandparents, aunts, and uncles if they were diagnosed with AMD. The more relatives who have been affected, and the closer they are to you on the family tree, the stronger the risk signal for our team to consider.
Beyond simply naming the relative, try to share the following information when you can.
These details help our team estimate your personal risk timeline and plan for the type of AMD most relevant to your situation.
Some routine eye exams focus primarily on your current exam findings without exploring family history in depth. If your doctor does not ask, bring it up yourself. This is especially important if a parent or sibling has been diagnosed, since that is one of the most significant pieces of eye health history you can share.
Once we know your family history, we use that information to build a more personalized care plan. This can affect how often you are examined, what we look for, and what steps we recommend to reduce your risk.
If you have a family history of AMD, our team will likely recommend comprehensive dilated eye exams, where drops are used to widen your pupils so we can examine the back of your eye in detail, starting before age 60. Depending on your individual findings, annual or even more frequent exams may be appropriate. Earlier detection gives us more options for early intervention.
Our team will evaluate your complete risk profile, looking at family history alongside other factors including smoking status, diet, physical activity, blood pressure, and body weight. Understanding the full picture allows us to identify which modifiable risks you can address to help offset some of your genetic susceptibility.
We may recommend that you begin using an Amsler grid at home, even before any signs of AMD are detected on your exam. The Amsler grid is a simple checkerboard-style chart used to detect distortion or missing areas in your central vision. Checking each eye separately every day allows you to notice subtle changes between office visits and report them to us promptly.
You cannot change your genes, but you have real power over several of the factors that determine whether your genetic susceptibility leads to advanced AMD. Taking action early, before any signs of disease appear, is when protective habits have the greatest impact.
Smoking is the single most preventable risk factor for AMD, and its effect is even greater in people who already carry a genetic predisposition. A family history of AMD is a strong reason to quit smoking if you currently smoke, or to never start. Eating a diet rich in leafy green vegetables, colorful fruits, fish, and healthy fats, similar to a Mediterranean-style diet, and protecting your eyes from UV light with quality sunglasses, are additional steps that support long-term macular health.
AREDS2 supplements are a specific vitamin and mineral formula shown to slow the progression of AMD in people who already have intermediate-stage disease. They are not recommended as a preventive measure for people with healthy eyes, even those with a strong family history. Our team will recommend AREDS2 only if your exam reveals findings that meet the criteria. Until then, focusing on diet and lifestyle provides the foundation for macular protection.
For people with elevated family history, consistent follow-up is one of the most protective things you can do. AMD can progress quietly before causing noticeable vision changes. Regular exams allow our team to detect early drusen deposits (small yellowish deposits under the retina that are early signs of AMD) or pigment changes before they affect your daily vision, giving us the best opportunity to intervene at the right time.
These questions address situations and decisions that come up when patients are navigating AMD risk and family history for the first time.
Having two affected parents does increase your risk beyond having just one, because you are more likely to have inherited a greater number of AMD-associated genetic variants. However, AMD is not a certainty even in this situation. What it does mean is that you should begin dilated eye exams earlier, maintain close monitoring, and pay careful attention to modifiable risk factors like smoking and diet. Let our team know about both parents so we can factor this into your screening plan.
Schedule a comprehensive dilated eye exam as soon as possible if you have not had one recently. Early-onset AMD in a sibling is a meaningful signal that warrants prompt evaluation. Depending on your findings, our team may recommend beginning annual or more frequent monitoring right away. Starting Amsler grid home checks in the meantime is also a reasonable step while you wait for your appointment.
A negative family history does lower your relative risk, but it does not eliminate it. AMD can still develop due to age, smoking, prolonged UV exposure, poor diet, and cardiovascular risk factors, all of which act independently of genetics. Continue following age-appropriate screening recommendations and inform our team of any changes in your central vision, such as blurring or straight lines appearing wavy.
Current guidelines do not recommend genetic testing for AMD as a standard screening or preventive measure. The practical steps your children can take, including avoiding smoking, eating a nutrient-rich diet, exercising regularly, and beginning routine eye exams at age 40, provide the same real-world benefit as genetic information. Encourage them to share your AMD family history with their own eye doctors so it can be factored into their care.
Family history is associated with a higher likelihood of progression, but individual outcomes vary widely. Many patients with significant family histories remain at the early stage for years without progressing to advanced AMD. The most important things you can do are maintain your monitoring schedule, consider AREDS2 supplements if our team recommends them based on your stage of disease, and continue addressing modifiable risk factors. These steps give you the best chance of slowing progression regardless of your background.
AMD occurs across all ethnic groups, though rates of the most common genetic variants are highest in people of Northern European descent. Regardless of your background, a family history of AMD is clinically meaningful and should be shared with our team. We will incorporate it alongside all of your other risk factors to assess your individual situation accurately.

He did my Lasik surgery 20 years ago, treated my extremely dry eye issues, took care of my eyeglass prescriptions, did both of my cataract surgeries, and today surgically removed a calcification from my lower eyelid. Dr. Mahboobi is amazing and even figured out my difficult multifocal contact lens issue so I can now see without readers. She even rearranged her schedule to make apmt fit along with my husband’s appointment for his post-op cataract apmt in which Dr. Reisner miraculously used laser to fix his cataracts and fixed his lifelong vision so he no longer needs contacts or readers.
