A pediatric eye exam is different from a routine adult exam. Our team uses child-friendly tools and techniques that do not require a child to read letters or describe what they see. The goal is a thorough and comfortable experience for both child and parent.
Vision screenings at schools or pediatrician offices are useful as a first filter, but they do not produce a prescription and can miss subtle problems. A full comprehensive exam checks for refractive errors, eye alignment, tracking, and overall eye health. It is the definitive way to confirm whether glasses are needed.
Children have a strong focusing reflex that can mask the true prescription, especially farsightedness. To get an accurate measurement, our team uses cycloplegic refraction, a technique that involves dilating eye drops to temporarily relax the focusing muscles. With those muscles at rest, we can measure the eye's true optical state and prescribe accordingly.
The exam uses pictures, lights, and interactive tests that work for children of all ages, even those who cannot yet read. We check eye alignment, focusing ability, and eye movement in addition to measuring the prescription. Parents are always welcome to stay in the room, ask questions, and hear results right away.

Intervening early, when the eye is still actively growing, gives myopia-control strategies the greatest opportunity to make a difference. Nightly low-dose atropine drops are one of the most well-studied options for slowing myopia in children. They are used alongside regular glasses, not as a replacement for them. Certain soft contact lenses are designed specifically to slow myopia progression in children. Orthokeratology lenses, worn only at night, gently reshape the cornea while the child sleeps to provide clear daytime vision without daytime lenses. Multifocal soft lenses are another option. Specialty eyeglass lenses with peripheral defocus zones have been shown to help slow myopia progression and offer a glasses-only path for families not ready for contact lenses. While glasses correct existing vision problems, certain daily habits may help support healthy eye development and reduce the rate at which myopia worsens. These are simple, practical steps any family can build into a daily routine.
Spending time outdoors is one of the most consistently supported habits for reducing the risk of myopia development and slowing its progression. Current guidance recommends that children spend at least two hours per day outside. Recess, a walk after school, or time in the backyard all count. Bright natural light and the opportunity to focus at distance are both thought to play a role.
Long stretches of reading, homework, or screen use without breaks can increase eye strain and may contribute to myopia progression. A helpful guideline is to look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes of near work. Keeping screens at a comfortable arm's length and maintaining good room lighting are simple habits that support this goal.
Adequate sleep supports overall development, including visual processing. A well-balanced diet with leafy greens, colorful vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids supports general eye health. These habits are not a substitute for glasses or medical care, but they complement any treatment plan your child is on.

Children who wear glasses should have their prescription reviewed at least once per year. Some breakage in the first year or two is common, especially as children get used to handling eyewear. I've been seeing Dr. Reisner for over 20 years for all of my eye care needs. He did my Lasik surgery 20 years ago, treated my extremely dry eye issues, took care of my eyeglass prescriptions, did both of my cataract surgeries, and today surgically removed a calcification from my lower eyelid. He is an excellent doctor in every way (kind, patient, great listener, etc.). Staff are always kind and professional I absolutely recommend Dr. Reisner and The Eye Center. Dr. Mahboobi is amazing and even figured out my difficult multifocal contact lens issue so I can now see without readers. She even rearranged her schedule to make apmt fit along with my husband’s appointment for his post-op cataract apmt in which Dr. Reisner miraculously used laser to fix his cataracts and fixed his lifelong vision so he no longer needs contacts or readers. Life has improved tremendously for him thanks to Dr. Reisner’s laser cataract with trifocal IOLs.
